Celebrate Small Business Month
May is officially Small Business Month. It’s a time of year to celebrate our small business customers for all they do – all year long. Small businesses are what communities are built on and what area residents rely on.
At Salem Five, we are deeply committed to helping small businesses thrive and grow. From experienced bankers to flexible products and services to a can-do attitude, we partner with our business customers every step of the way. Although we’d love to visit and honor ALL our customers this month in person, we’d need more days in the month!
Here are just a few of the businesses we’ll be highlighting in social media as they were nominated by area branch managers as great examples of small business success. Check out our social channels this month to see more. And remember to patronize the small businesses in your community.

Business Credit Launches
Our Commercial Banking division continues to expand and grow. Ensuring we can serve businesses in all stages, we have added a Business Credit capability. This offering provides critical working capital to businesses in transition, leveraging Asset-based Lending tools that use Accounts Receivable and Inventory to qualify businesses for credit needs from $3 million to $25 million. We’re excited to incubate this offering led by a 30+ year veteran in the field, Keith Broyles. And we’ve already added an experienced Loan Officer to the team with Michael Richardson recently joining Salem Five. This capability complements our strong Commercial team and products and services offering with the ability to offer Revolving Loans secured by accounts receivable and inventory. This is in addition to the standard Term Loans which are secured by collateral such as equipment, owner-occupied real estate or intellectual property. It’s just another option for area businesses and demonstrates the capacity of Salem Five to serve this important customer base. If you own or know a business that might be interested in finding out more, please contact Keith Broyles.

Wealth Planning in Volatile Times
To say it’s been an interesting several weeks would be an understatement! Markets have continued to move sharply (both ways) in response to the various announcements on tariffs, as well as concerns over global trade. Steep sell offs, met with positive returns and rallies, volatility remains elevated across sectors and asset classes.
This is what we call a gut check moment. A time when the headlines feel loud. The numbers feel sharp. And your instincts may start to question your plan. Giving advice not to panic during severe market downturns can feel a little cliché, but it is the most important piece of financial advice you can get. In many cases, in the midst of heightened volatility, the best course of action is no action at all.
Here's What We're Focused On:
- Markets are reacting to headlines—not fundamentals.
The recent pullback has been driven by uncertainty around global policy, not because the economy or corporate earnings are collapsing. Markets often react first, analyze later. - Your plan may already account for volatility.
You’re not invested based on guesses about the next news cycle. Strong portfolio planning is based on your long-term financial plan, including your time horizon, risk-tolerance, and cashflow needs. - Emotional decisions can be costly.
History shows that selling during sharp declines often leads to missing the rebound. Staying invested through the cycle is what can lead to long-term success. - There may be strategic opportunities.
Periods like this can have some silver linings, which include tax planning advantages, rebalancing opportunities, and entry points into long-term themes. We’re watching closely for those.
Salem Five Wealth Management & Trust is here for anyone seeking advice or feeling uneasy.
Gut check moments are part of investing, but you know you’re not in this alone. We’re here to talk through what’s happening, review your plan and make sure you feel confident about where you're headed—even if the road feels bumpy right now.
