A Commitment to our Local Scholars

The Bright Minds Scholarship1, in conjunction with the Salem Five Charitable Foundation, supports academic excellence and community leadership across Essex and Middlesex counties. We recognize that the journey to a four-year degree requires significant dedication—and significant resources.

To support that journey, we provide a scholarship award designed to make a real-world impact on the cost of higher education.

The Award

  • 5 Scholars Selected Annually: Each year, we name five exceptional students as Bright Minds Scholars.
  • Up to $20,000 total: Awarded as $5,000 annually over four years of undergraduate study.
  • Renewable: Maintain good academic standing to receive support throughout your entire bachelor's degree program.


Who Should Apply

We are looking for high school seniors in our local communities who demonstrate both academic drive and financial need.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Residency: Permanent resident of Essex or Middlesex County, MA, and be a U.S. citizen.
  • Academic: Entering a four-year college full-time with a record of academic success.
  • Financial Need: Typically characterized by a Student Aid Index (SAI) of $13,000 or less.

How to Apply


To ensure a professional and fair selection process, Salem Five partners with Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship Fund to manage applications.

  1. Visit the Phillips Scholarship Application portal .
  2. Complete the standard application by the May 1st deadline.
  3. Eligible students from Essex and Middlesex counties will automatically be considered for the Salem Five Bright Minds award.

1The Bright Minds Scholarship is an annual award of $5,000, renewable for up to four years ($20,000 total), provided recipients remain in good academic standing as defined by the scholarship program guidelines. The Salem Five Charitable Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization. Scholarship awards are granted without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or disability. Final selection of scholarship recipients is at the sole discretion of the Salem Five Executive Committee in partnership with the Phillips Scholarship Fund.
