Salem Five Announces the Winner of the 2017 Music Matters Contest

November 2017

Salem, Mass., March 13, 2017 – Salem Five is pleased to announce that Angad Singh of Nashua, New Hampshire is the winner of the 2017 Music Matters contest. Music Matters is an initiative co-sponsored by Salem Five and 92.5 The River to support music education in local schools. To enter the contest, students from around the region submitted a video of themselves performing an original song, along with an explanation of why music is important to them to the music matters website.

Singh, a student at Bishop Guertin High School, was chosen by Salem Five and The River from five finalists. He recently recorded his winning song "Eyes So Blue" at the historic River Music Hall, which was then played on The River as part of the station’s Homegrown Music Showcase.

“Since childhood, music has been a powerful outlet for me to express myself,” said Singh. “It has a cathartic effect and allows me to connect with people at a much deeper level.”

Singh opened for recording artist Brandi Carlile at The River’s annual RiverFeast benefit on November 11, where he performed his original music to a sold out crowd. In addition, Singh’s school received a $1,500 grant from the Salem Five Charitable Foundation in support of its music department.

“We congratulate Angad, who stood out among an exceptionally talented group of finalists this year,” said Jim Nelson, chief marketing officer, Salem Five. “and, as always, it’s a pleasure to partner with the River on our shared commitment to support music programs in our local schools.”

“Angad is an excellent example of why it’s so important to continue to support music programs in our local schools,” said Donald St. Sauveur, general manager of 92.5 The River. “Nurturing a student’s interest in music can provide them with a lifetime of opportunities. We’re delighted to continue to support the Music Matters program through our partnership with Salem Five.”
