In 1990, Louis A. Barretto, Jr. founded Malden, Massachusetts-based L&L Services and Landscape Supplies as a small towing and snow removal business. “Originally, we started as a towing service out of my parents’ house,” Barretto says. “We grew the business to eight trucks and purchased our current corporate location in 1994. In 1998, the towing portion of the business was sold so that we could grow into other areas.”
Barretto started the company based on a simple premise: He loved working with trucks and equipment. He started the reborn L&L with one small six-wheel dump truck and a skid steer loader, but he’s parlayed his love and efforts into an operation boasting 42 pieces of equipment providing trucking, excavation, roll-off dumpsters, snow and dirt removal—“in fact,” adds Barretto, “L&L has grown to be a leader in the transportation of clean and dirty dirt throughout the northeast” —an automotive and truck repair division that does everything from routine maintenance to engine swaps and more.
Capabilities like L&L’s don’t go unnoticed. This past winter, when our nation’s capitol was hit by back-to-back storms yielding a record snowfall, Barretto was called upon to help dig Washington, D.C. out. “Not only did we mobilize 12 of our own loaders, bobcats and trucks, but we pulled together 30 of our associates to help out. Within 24 hours, we were in the district, moving snow to open up the roadways and neighborhoods.”
L&L Services and Landscape Supplies is continuing its roll. The firm is currently in the process of expanding its landscape supply division and is in the final stages of completing its new 10,000-sqaure-foot corporate offices and fleet maintenance facility.
Barretto credits at least part of his growth to getting the financial help he needs. “Our new facility was built with the help of Salem Five’s Commercial Lending Division,” he says. “We’ve used most of the services offered by Salem Five, including its investment services, insurance, banking and commercial lending. In general, our relationship with Commercial Lending Officer Matt Marmen, and the Malden branch, has made it a lot less stressful to grow even during these turbulent economic times.”
While Barretto acknowledges the help he’s gotten in the continued growth of L&L, he brings it all back to his original point: “It makes it a lot easier to build a good business when you love what you do,” he avers.
